Enjoying or Enduring the Turbo?

Due to the unpleasant cycling weather I have been partaking in a spot of indoor cycling which I am surprisingly beginning to feel indifferent about .
Previously I detested the torture machine and experienced some discomfort in the nether regions including numbness in the little General! But not deterred and spurred on by a reinforced vigor to beat my Ironman bike pb(4:51) next year, I have been enthused and almost excited by the prospect of spending time on the turbo.
I did a few runs whilst in Spalding in the lead up to Christmas. I used the Spalding Triathlon run route and because of the ice it was taking me between 4-6mins longer than in race mode.
Now I am back in Brum I am trying to get arse in saddle time. Turboman has recommended a training session that replicates a 2hr L2 ride. I'm not sure of that but the session feels OK and takes your mind of the fact you go nowhere fast. Warm up(10min) then 30sec all out followed by 4min steady for 6 reps then a warm down(10min). This has been taking 47min for those too inebriated to work it out. I've done it twice now but my legs don't feel like they are doing a 2hr ride. On the plus side though I am getting 120+ cadence on the effort part and 90+ on the steady part and getting an enjoyable 47min workout. Thanks Turboman.
Tomorrow is a run with a turbo session planned for the evening again. Snow is scheduled!!!!
Any other turbo sessions are gratefully received. Anything to take the mind away from the boredom.

a merry xmas to all

Well folks I will be without the world wide web for a few days so enjoy the Xmas period and dont overindulge.

I have just carried out my longest stint on the torture contraption helped out by watching the classic John Wayne film 'The Quiet Man'. Two hours of turbo is more than enough for anyone. If anyone has any tips on going long(on the turbo) i'd be grateful.

see ya'll next week

A new steed waiting to be ridden!

After years of abuse for riding my 'girls bike' Giant TCR i have finally passed it on to a friend and spent some hard earned cash on a new bike. The Giant originally cost me £1250 back in 2000/1 and in the end the only original components were the handlebars, frame and STI's. It was a great bike that fitted me and felt comfy for most of the time but, its time to stop reminiscing and move on. Its gone to a good home.
So whilst scouring Ebay, Wiggle, Cycling Weekly ads and Planet X i was looking for something around the £1000 mark. Not an extravagance when I was looking for a full carbon steed.
Daz almost had me with a Raleigh Avanti Carbon. A very nice bike with Shimano 105 but I couldn't get to see one in the flesh. Planet X was next up, good deals and good value but there is something about the road frames I just don't like. Then Daz suggested Halfords!!! Hello since when did Halfords and cycling extend their knowledge beyond spotty youths, bmx's and crap mountain(use the term loosely) bikes. When Chris Boardman is involved I guess.
A trip to Halfords to look at the bike was first on the agenda. In typical Halfords expectations they had to cut the U-lock of the demo model!
The black Team Carbon with SRAM Rival groupset with carbon STI's and Ritchey wheels looked good for a grand only I was after one of the 500 limited edition bikes. I cheekily asked if they did a Forces discount but alas no, but they did do a student discount. Bargain! I'm doing a Masters in Education and I thought I'd be getting 5% like Amazon offers. To my surprise it was 10%. WOW the bike for £900.
Well the bike arrived last week, No204, but weather has prevented any riding. Lets face it, it's white and carbon. Who wants to be cleaning off the road grit, salt and snow.
The bike weighs an allegedly 17.6lbs (medium frame) but there is room for improvement. A lighter saddle or carbon chainset might be on the upgrade list eventually. I've just added some Look Carbon Keo pedals which still has the 'on the road' weight sub-18lbs. I'm also waiting on a 24g white carbon bottle cage from Taiwan.
I cant wait for the first nice day to try it out. Til then its turbo, I'm getting used to the numbness, and running.
Have a great Xmas and New Year everyone. Train smart! Winter miles, summer smiles blah blah blah :-)

winters here, must be time for torture

hi all
I know ive been quiet bon here recently but with excuses and more excuses than I can think of, well, I've just really beeen busy.
But good news. I've started training again and with a plan in mind(yet to go to paper or screen).

I started with a pootle on the bike last week which was glorious in the afternoon sun. No planned route just headed out to find some new roads and ended up back in Birmingham 1.5 hrs later. Happy days.So far.
The weekend was busy so not much happed then decided enough is enough and got the torture machine set up last night. An hour later at 100rpm and sweating buckets, despite having the windows wide open, I got off the wheeled attachment with numb testicles. Why does it do that? Is it only me or does every bloke get it??? Hey ho it felt good anyway. The ride not the lack of feeling in the nether regions.

Then this morning I got up and did an hours swim. To quote another accomplished swimmer in the pool " it is like a trout farm" avoiding the muppets who get up early to stand in the pool chatting to their friends they will probably see at work or have no concept of swimming in a straight line. GO FOR A COFFEE OR STAY IN BED and the pool is designed with black lines to make it easy to know where you are going! AAAAHHHHH
Anyway I just did a simple warm up and lots of drills.

Tonight I tried to tame the torture beast again. It still has the better of my delicate areas but after another hour I was heartened to keep trying until I can get a screw for my illuminators then its out on the tarmac.
No running yet. :-( still got a poorly foot. My heel is sore for no reason. See what the witch doctor says when I can get 5mins to go!

The swim was steady

winter break in Autumn

Wow i can't believe the last time i updated the blog. Since the relays I have done the Vitruvian although severe backache and tingling toes forced me to stop during the run. It shameful being seen walking in the race when your going in the right direction but walking back is worse!! the looks you get and the 'come on mate, keep going' comments don't really help. You want to tell everyone the reason you stopped is because you risk serious injury carrying on. Pay attention you young 'uns! Not finishing is starting become more frequent...well twice this year in two middle distance events. Not great!
But .... as I mentioned in a previous blog, you have to take away a positive. Well the positive is its now the end of the season and on reflection I have achieved so much on so little and its time to recuperate and build for next year. WOO HOO.
A quick summary of achievements - PB for half marathon (1:15) , 2nd in Ironman South Africa, 2:46 marathon in London, a course pb for a club 10TT , and a National Gold at the Club Relays with BRAT. Pretty damn good considering.
So my Infectious Diseases exam is in a few weeks then the training starts. Heres looking to a fantastic 2010!!!!

A good TT and a National Gold!

After doing OK in the BRAT midweek aquathlon last week I decided to use the 'Stealth' in a club TT whilst back in Lincolnshire for the evening. I had just finished rebuilding it with shimano parts(the only campag bit left is the chainset). I got some Planet X tribars from Breezy and set them quite narrow. I turned up for the Aslacksby 10 held at Bourne Wheelers(my old cycling club or one of anyway).
I didnt do much of a warm up but set off in the 39 ring....accidentally but an easy start all the same and was soon on the 53 heading downhill. Not long after I'm back on the 39 for an uphill. The 1st two miles are rolling then its pan flat till the last 200 metres. Most of the club were doing a 2up TT but I needed a solo as a marker. When I got over the hills and turned left I had the tailwind but twisty section through a few villages. I was catching a pair of riders before the last village turn but held back slightly not risking catching them on the junction. A quick glance at my watch told me I was on for a fast time but I still had 1-2 miles to go possibly into a bit of wind. The Stealth was fast and I felt really aero but my wrists were aching on the straight bars. I caught the ladies 2up TT team of a mother and daughter just before the last left to the finish. The mother was 71 years old! and she was on the front. I drifted out to apex the junction and another glance to the side and I saw a black helmet. Little did I know this was my minute man catching me. A downhill dash then the last uphill in 22 min 47 sec and a new course pb for me by 2 secs. I glanced over my shoulder on the line to see the minute man Ian Redding there. He did a 21:48 for a new course record.
I left the race feeling great as I have been lacking a bit of bike speed. It gave me confidence ready for the National Club Relay Triathlon Champs to be held at the weekend. I was going to be racing for Birmingham Running And Triathlon (BRAT) club as a Vet40.

So fast forward to Saturday at Holme Pierpoint. I was third man in the relay with Steve Cock the lead out man, Duncan Hough second and Mark Hirsch bringing up the rear.
The start was manic and Duncan hit the water in about 30th place. The RAF team with Mike Masters was already away swimming as was the BRAT A team. By the end of my swim lap we were ahead of BRAT A. Not sure were the RAF teams were. I had a good swim and was constantly overtaking. I just couldn't get past one swimmer at the end of the swim but I nailed him and a few others in the sprint along the slippery rubber matting. I handed over the chip to Mark then set off to get my bike and do some streching ready for the 15km TT. The bike legs felt fast and easy upto about 800m to go. A quick bike rack and hand over the chip again to Mark H then try to recover for the 5km run.
Just prior to setting off on the run I was bricking it. Our team was leadiung the Vets but I didn't know by how much. Its all or nothing in the run and a set off as fast as my little legs would go. I just had to dip over the mat to register the chip then set off up the grassy hill. I just kept counting steps to maintain a focus and kept the pace all along the back leg with the tailwind. I caught a few runners from my wave including a TFN guy. My confidence was building and my achilles heel was holding up. The last leg into the wind was tough and the straight goes on forever. I was just winding up for the sprint finish and got a big cheers from the BRAT supporters. How pleased was I to hand over to Mark. My job was done. My splits were 7:36/20:42/17:49 not bad when you think there is a little lost in the changeovers.
The big thing was getting Gold for the Vets40. I was the only member of the team beforehand without a gold medal at any national event. The BRAT club took six medals in all; 4 golds and 2 bronze. The young lads did the club proud taking a bronze against considerably older and bigger athletes.
The event was awesome with a fantastic astmosphere. Definately one of the most fun events I've ever done. This is a must do race and as a spectator event much better than the Hyde Park fiasco!
The Gold medal fits in well with my Silver at the Middle distance and World Bronze for Aquathlon and my Ironman 2nd place. Happy days

BRAT midweek aquathlon

This week I entered the BRAT midweek aquathlon and moved up a couple of places from last time. hooray! Well it wasn't as quick as the last one but the swim was longer than last time(somehow) by 2 mins for me. Transition was poor too. I struggled to get out of the wetsuit and into my trainers. I need to re think my practice when i launch my assualt back to full fitness next year.
the run started well but i soon ran out of steam on the muddy slippery track. I didnt think i went off to quick but it was difficult to maintain a rythym and cadence. Excuses excuses!! But I did finish in 2nd place so cant be all that bad...can I?

Well I must admit I'm really looking forward to and planning next year already. It will involve plenty of biking needless to say. Roll on October and the end of my studying!

next planned timed event is Tuesday in a club 10TT as prep for the National relays with BRAT if I can get a place.

It was good to hear the other guys are doing so well. Westy doing the 25TT taking the RAF Champs. Saggs going very fast on the bike and Daz and Pete N flying on the bike at the IS Tri and not to mention bionic Brad....say no more. It makes me jealous sometimes that I'm not going so well but it's my own making and i'll be back with a vengeance. Look out Ironman Switerland 2010 cause I'm coming to take my Kona slot this time!

On a go slow!

I've not been posting anything for the last month due to work, work and more work ..oh and also a little embarrassment. I'm not sorry to say I don't like being beaten but I'm sorry to say I have. How I miss 2005 when I felt invincible. Well you're only as good as your last race.
So in the last month I have come 4th in the BRAT Aquathlon after an OK swim and a slowish run. I came 6th at the RAF Sprint Champs although I was 1st Vet (still not used to that term either!). And to cap it off I got overtaken on the bike by Daz and JC and I couldn't catch Brad. Well that never used to happen.Hey Ho back to the drawing board.
I have been catching up on my studying recently and maybe neglecting the bike mileage a little.
I have been picking up the training again ready for the IS race and the Relays which I'm racing with BRAT as a Vet (that term again).
I heard from Jase midweek and he told me of his soaking in our beautiful summer. On Thursday night I thought I'd go open water swimming at Bittell Reservoir and I took the scenic route(I got lost) when the skies opened and dropped an ocean on me. I considered riding home from swimming in my wetsuit but was worried about aqua planning and coming off the bike. The rain didn't stop all evening and I had to put on my wet kit to ride the 10 miles home. Nice! Good swim though. Did 2 x 1 km loops in a lovely warm lake.
I went out on a ride with the BRAT 'A' group yesterday for 50 miles but ended up as 60 miles and it was hard work. The first half was an average of 18 something mph and the final average was nearly 22mph. We were hammering a 5up TT along the A435 at nearly 40mph at one point. My legs were screaming 'PLEASE STOP!'

I've also entered IM Switzerland 2010 and considering IM Malaysia 2010 but I'm having trouble with their website trying to get all the necessary info..No scroll bar! any ideas? anyone been to KL or Langkawi and know of cheap accommodation?

Do I have to get used to being overtaken?

A week ago in Bala I was thinking the season was over but this week at the Dambuster I was determined to give the run a try and maybe even finish the race. Test the achilles! Hmmm.
The swim didnt go to plan. Nige was too far right and some fish like person (DS) on the left with Mike Masters dropping in on my heels for the first few hundred yards before he and someone else overtook me. A steady T1 and out onto the bike assuming everyone except Mike was up the road. How wrong I was. Only DS up the road as I had left T1 in 2nd place on the road.I did see him on the 'Ripple' up ahead. Westy came past on the 'Ripple followed by one of the fast boys from the next wave. I tried to up the pace but there was no power and i was pushing at least 3 gears too light at IM pace...maybe slower. Jas and Mal overtook me but I did catch DS at 20miles. The saving grace was I did feel like I was getting into a rythym at 20miles. I'm just not used to being caught on the bike after years of 'being a biker'.
An easy T2 to avoid the cramps I've been getting sort of worked as I got cramp in my inner thigh(thats a new one!) but I decided to run it off and finish the race. With Jase Wakely ahead and Mal Rose just behind I had an incentive. Going across the Dam I expected to see some other RAF guys but only Westy was ahead after I caught Jase. Confused I was. Maybe it was oxygen debt. The run went well if not slower than I'm used to but I was pleased to finish and hold off Jase for third. I didnt know I was overtaken by a RAF person(DS) because he didnt have the kit. An inherent problem we seem to have every year with suppliers! Would I have held him off?? maybe/maybe not. I did 2:03 a few years ago then did an Ironman a week later. This time it was 2:12 with an early season Ironman.
As it is my legs are screaming for mercy despite a post race massage. I did go for a gentle cycle ride tonight to try and ease them ready for some work prior to the Sprint Champs. See you there. God this short stuff hurts!

Bala middle distance swin amd bike

it's been ages since i wrote anything online because i've been busy writing assignment and there's no point writing if i'm not training.
I got back from the training camp and tweaked my right achilles and have spent the last few weeks trying to get over that.
Today was the National Champs in Bala where I had I got a silver in 2005. It's one of the hardest races I have completed but today I didn't even get that far.
I had a good swim coming in about 7th in the vets wave. No splits yet! The bike leg started ok but I was obviously not in the mood or frame of mind to do well. My plan was to work hard on the way out and expected a tail wind home. Going into the turn I saw Jase Wakeley and was probably a few mins up due to the 10 min gap in waves. After the turn I made a few places but then started to lose them rapidly for no reason. It felt like riding with the brakes on. The return journey over the mountain was awful. I was dying! I'm sure there was a guy with trainers on and no straps who over took me. Bloody awful is an understatement. I took T2 easy reflecting on the Brize Norton event and set off easy to test the achilles tendon. hmmmm
A steady jog around the lake gave plenty of thinking time. My hips were hurting and then back ache and then the dreaded cramp I always get at Bala. Add to that the achilles injury that seemed to feel like it was building in pressure and after only a mile and a half I stopped, turned around and walked a long walk of self shame. Save the success for another day is the way I'm thinking. Analysis over, shame banished, move on.
Try again next week then it's a long few months of proper assessment and treatment ready for an Ironman.

back from cramp

whilst watching the Grand Prix this morning in the kitchen with the doors open to the beautiful sunshine I contemplated my calf injury. To my suprise I could feel no pain. A little poke here and there and it seemed 90% back to normal so as soon as Jenson was splahing the bubbles about I put the trainers on and went for a 4 mile run. Initailly the right ankle was sore but this was just stiffness. The calf was fine. 27 1/2 mins later I was back in the house and happy to to back training. Theres still plenty of stretching to be done and the achilles pain(rt side) I think is due to rubbing caused by the heel support/achilles cutaway. New Saucony trainers are on the way.
I'm now contemplating the racing strategy for this season. I'm still short of miles and time to train. I still have loads of Open University study to do and it gets in the way of training. But... its great to be back racing and this year will be the base for the next. Bring it on!

mini series tri disaster

you know when you're really looking forward to doing a race even though you know it's gonna hurt? Well the pain I have now is bloody different from the pain I was expecting.

On Monday night I ran with the BRAT's and after running to the session I covered about 13miles at a comfortable pace, chatting alll the way round about IMSA with Mark H. When i woke the next morning my right achilles was sore and my left shin. I put it down to running on tarmac and uneven surfaces.

I decided against the TT on Tuesday night as I had some bits to sort on the bikes as I was lending one to one of the novices for the mini tri the next day.

Wednesday was race day and I headed to BZN with a merry band of novice triathletes. I was still unsure about running but as the day went on and my achilles warmed up and I did some stretching I was hopeful but I would decide in T2.
The swim starts were altered so Brad, Westy, JC and myself could race together. Brad led the way in the pool followed by me, Westy and JC. I was pleased to be about 10m behind Brad and felt comfortable throughout the swim. Onto the bike I quickly overtook Brad and when on the main road got into a settled ride until a BMW overtook me then stopped by the parked car to allow an oncoming car to pass. With no room to get past I was halted in top gear. A heard a whoosh as Westy flew past. I quickly got back up to pace and chased Westy then overtook him only to be retaken about 5 mins later. He then started to pull away as I tried to limit the loss knowing my run was better than his. He probably had about 15-20 sec going into T2. This where the pain comes in..... as I got my feet out of the cycle shoes my left calf cramped with an intensity like I've never experienced. I racked the bike but could not bend my leg for fear of increasing the pain. And so my race ended in T2 trying to put on a run shoe with a straight leg. On the bright side I was saved from hurting my achilles any more. Well done to Westy who went on to post the fastest bike and win overall. And well done to my novice colleagues especially Amy who came 3rd.
A massage tonight did little to ease the pain. Anyone else ever had residual pain in the days following cramp?

Feeling fresh and good to go!!!!

I have'nt really done much since returning from Cyprus as Ive been trying to catch up on my Open University Science degree that is breaking me!!!!! Its immunology at the minute and its complicated. I believe I should have been a pro athlete with not much brain power and my only stress was to when I will eat again or get my next nap. But I'm not and the OU is self inflicted and I just have to manage my time a bit better.
I did go for a wonderful massage last night though and my legs feel great and light again without lumps in my muscles. Ive also been sleeping a lot better which helps. It has been a busy month after all.
Today is all about studying but I'm planning on running over the weekend just to test my calves out again and I'm planning another 10tt on Tuesday then the mini tri on Wednesday.
have a great weekend!

10 mile TT bursts your lungs.

I have aquired this exotic beauty and tried it out tonight in the Warwickshire RC 10tt. It was windy and I felt the front end wobble a few times which was quite unnerving. I was told the course was worth a low 22 min but tonight with the wind I only managed a 23:49. and it hurt just as much as the TT the other week. The course is a two lap affair with a few turns and twists. The winning time was 22:30 by a rider who knocked out a 21:10 a few weeks ago. Sound promising. maybe i'll get under 22:30 sometime this year. I'm hoping to use this bike for the Brize Norton mini tri next week but it will need a little positional tweaking and I want to change the components from campag to shimano. I never liked campag!

gears are over-rated for hills!

we come to the end of the training week in Cyprus and my legs are suitably thrashed and in much need of a massage. The weather has been variable to say the least with thunder storms and galeforce winds earlier and calm and sunny now we are leaving.
The week started well with a few 60 mile rides in the troodos foothills including one of my old favourites to Pachna(a 13km climb) followed by a further 6km of climbing to Loufou.
swimming was hit and miss with the wind and waves and the pool use limited to 2 sessions. I stopped running after about 3 days as my calf was tight still from the London marathon. It seems better now but I'm sure Hannah will find some lumps with her delicate massaging techniques!
Yesterday was one of my most enjoyable rides so far this year. Having spent nearly 6 years in Cyprus previously I had never ridden to Troodos or Olympus. Yesterday I did. westy had pointed out earlier in the week that my small ring looked larger than normal and so it was. A 42 tooth instead of a 39...gulp! It just means i'll have to be light on the cranks to avoid blowing.
As we set off with a slight tailwind Westy was spinning on the front of the peleton. It was strangely quiet as we contemplated the near 2000 metres of vertical ascent.
After about 8miles we start climbing out of Kantou towards Pano Kivides and aware of the next 30 miles to the gods I was on the granny ring 42/23. After the initial steepness it settles to a gradual gradient and I was able to drop onto the 21 sprocket. I used this most of the way up the mountain and proably only spent about 3km total on the 23. After lunch at Troodos we climeb the final few km to Olympus after Phil the Double set off on his own. It would be daft to get so close and not do it all climbing to the highest point in Cyprus. A total ride time of 3hrs 8min to Olympus (2hr 53min to Troodos).
I decided on top that I would big ring (53) he way to Akrotiri. Only once going back up to Kivides did it hurt a little. Top speed was 45.9 mph. Total ride time on the way back was 1hr 44min. total mileage 80miles.

So on the last day the bike is packed and read to face the UK weather again. Myself, Mike Doug, Westy went for a swim in the calmest I've ever seen the Med. Bliss. If only race days were like this.

London marathon update

well i managed to run all the way after finishing an Ironman Triathlon 3 weeks ago today. And in a fast(ish) time too. 2 Hrs 46 Mins 38 Secs........330 overall. Cant be bad, eh?

I went out for dinner with Daz and Anthea Sharpe last night and got back to the Easyjet hotel at Victoria with a painful tummy! Bless!
I was meant to meet Daz at Victoria Stn this morning but the gates to the Underground were locked and I missed the Tube having to make my way to Blackheath on my own. Waterloo was out of action. Good old London hosting the biggest race in the world decide to have line works on this weekend same as last year! Nice one Boris...numpty!
Chilled out in the AAA tent at Blackheath with RAF team. Caught up with old friends. Decided to warm up enroute...after all its a long way.
Set off easy so I thought but still went thru mile1 on 5:45ish. The plan was to run on feel and go steady to half about 1:20. I went thru on 1:19:30ish. not bad!
I started to miss the timings about 15-16 miles going thru in 6:50/mile when I was meant to be doing 6:15's hmmmm.
Mile 21 really suffering from quad cramp but trying hard not to think about it. We all know thought induced cramp brings it on more quick. At 22m I tried to quicken up, after some mental maths, to make 2:45.
The last 2.2 miles I felt like I was hammering along, despite the sore quads, but going no quicker.
With 800 metres to go I needed an olympic time to break 2:45 but still I tried. Better to try and fail than never try at all.
I did manage to catch a Navy runner about 10 metres from the line.

so positives....
I finished in the top 500
I was within a min of my pb depite doing an ironman 3 weeks ago
I tried a different running strategy that nearly paid off.
I had a massage after to help recovery
I'm in reasonably good shape and in for a good season
got to meet up with old friends

negatives..
it was too hot(and that's beyond my control)
I missed my pb(so what, there'll be other times)
had tummy problems before and after the race

here's looking forward to Cyprus training camp!

First 10TT for about 2yrs

I did my first 10 TT last night and OMG I forgot how much they can hurt. With only a few days to go to the London Marathon I thought I would deplete my carb reserves by doing the Bourne Wheelers 10 Mile Time trial. On a bike not on foot!
I had got home earlier in the day for parent's evening at my son's school and was still there at 1840hrs when the last appointment was at 1800hrs. A quick call to Paul Breeze to secure a starting number, I raced home, threw the bike in the car, changed into skinsuit and set off for the 15mile drive to the start. I arrived with number 17 on the start line and I was (last rider)number 21 off! As I pumped my tyres a friend attached my number to the race belt and I arrived on the line with 20secs to go.
I set off without a watch or HR monitor and basically just rode as hard as I could despite not having done any speed sessions. My lungs were burning! I caught number 20 fairly quickly on the hilly section but number 19 was a 16yr old lad with awesome power and potential for greater things. He finished in 23:05. I finished in 24:23 with an average speed of 24.61mph.
My legs feel OK today but my lungs are still burning a bit. Generally I was very pleased with the TT and realise that a little better prep and a warm up may make for faster times. A positive wind direction makes the Aslackby course one of the fastest Bourne Wheelers TT and I think my best on there was a long 22 a few years ago. Still early in the season!
Roll on Sunday afternoon!

nearly London Marathon time!

with only a few days to go to the London Marathon I am starting to wonder just how I will run the race, I want to run sub 2hr 45min. Do I run a 1:20 followed by another with a few mins of leeway or nail it and hang on....hmmmm. It would be easier to make the decision if I had 1000's of long training miles.

I have done a handful of runs since the Ironman two weeks ago. A 4km jog a few days after. A 5.5 mile steady the weekend after. A fast 6.25 last Wednesday and 10x1min hill efforts last Thursday with the appropriate warm up and down. Last night I trained with the BRAT guys doing just shy of 10miles in 1hr 18min. I had a slightly painful massage tonight with Hannah. She manages to find all the knots!

just a bit of hydration and carbo loading then roll on Sunday and hope the Ironman has left my body.

Results to follow.....race number 756

One week post-Ironman

What a difference a week makes. This time last Sunday i was cooking under the African sun wish away the miles to the end of the Ironman, this week I'm comtemplating how to run the London Marathon in 2 weeks.

Last weeks Ironman was my slowest from 4 races but I achieved the highest overall position(27th), a podium place (2nd) and had my 2nd fastest swim (57:43) thanks to a new Blueseventy Helix wetsuit.

So how was the race?

SWIM
Daz Sharpe knocked my goggles 50m into the swim(cheers Mate?), we had both decided to race tactically positioning ourselves way to the left of the pro's taking the straightest line to the first turn. We would swim further but hopefully lead the weaker swimmers. Hmmm me thinks some others had the same idea. The bun fight lasted a whole lap meaning my goggles got knocked a few more times. After the beach run half way (27 min something) I settled to my own pace in clear water. Result 57:43

T1
No help available in the tent. Dropped a few gels from the cycle jersey pockets and mixed the flavours up. Result 2:51

BIKE
The first lap was good. Settled riding, eating the gels and drinking mostly B.fuel by Be-Well. The second lap was ok and slight slower as I made use of the special needs bag to take on more B.fuel which was still cool having been frozen overnight. Lap three was getting tough in the heat and I got a little bilious and had to discipline myself to take the gels regardless of how I felt. The wind never seemed to be in one direction. Did my number 1 with 3km to go. Result 5:12:26

T2
Nice and steady. Lots of suncream on. feeling good. Result 2:25

Run
set of at HR160 as planned to run a 3:10. This lasted a couple of km as my bowels had other ideas. In desperate need of a toilet for 3km I found one in a field around the 5KM mark. One km later I needed the same but had to wait til 8km.Running again at HR148 was comfortable but I drank too many bags of water in the attempt to hydrate and cool but it sloshed in my stomach. I plodded to the 37 Km mark when I had stopped drinking and was using water to cool my arms legs and head. The last 5km was an all or nothing in an attempt to get on the podium. Unknown to me was that 3rd place was 20minutes behind me. I left Roger Canham with 3km to go and pushed as hard as I could. It felt like sprinting. !km to go and I unleashed the fury with all I had. A few high 5's down the shute and an eye on the clock spotted (9:48:54 and counting). I eventually crossed the line in my fourth Sub 10 Hour Ironman. Result 9:49:14

transition done,ready to GO!

hi all readers

The pasta party was last night and the opportunity to fill our faces with pasta and cakes and enjoy a show by some Zulu dancing. The hype was building and the goose bumps starting.

Today we have just checked into transition and both have good spots for the bike exit. Daz has an awesome spot for his bags too. Mine are OK, halfway up the racks. Gave our best wishes to Stephen and Bella Bayliss. What other sport do the pro's chat to you as an equal!! Good luck to all UK athletes.

We went to the Seaview Lion Sanctuary/Park yesterday and had photos taken with the lion cubs and a safari tour in our hire car BUT today we went to Kragga Kamma park to see the cheetah's. What an experience! We both had our photo's taken with Duma the full grown male. I layed behind him and stroked his head and cheeks. Then if that wasn't good enough the ranger took us into the one year cubs. Again we had lots of photos with the fastest mammal on earth. The best!

Went to the race brief this afternoon. There are plenty of penalty opportunities including for littering. You get a 100m window around the feeds otherwise its a yellow card and a stop, sign in and go. Drafting is 4min penalty.

We eat our final meal in about an hour then its bed then breakfast and HAMMERTIME!!

Heres hoping for a fast time.

hi everyone from PE

a quick update

i've had 3 punctures in 4 rides, stung on the shin by something? and stung around the throat by a bluebottle jellyfish!!! It hurt like hell and the pain lasted all day.

Went for a run with Daz and Mark H last night. One 8.3 mile lap but at 7.4 mph...easy peasy!

Today had a great swim today with Daz, Roger, Haldane and the BRAT guys, Mark H and Mark A. One lap easy in 29 mins and NO sharks!

Also went for a ride easy around the course 60km. Good to see the locals creating lots of debris cutting the verges....aaaaahhhhh!!! saw some antelope and mongoose today whilst riding.

I have now checked in and registered. NUMBER 1076.

weather looks to be favourable for a sub 10hr but hoping for 9.30 hmmm we'll see!

live from PE, South Africa

Hi all

I arrived in Port Elizabeth yeasdterday after un uneventful flight via Jo'burg. I had the bike in a Cannondale cardboard box(they are the biggest and you leave the back wheel on) and my suitcase wrapped in selophane at Heathrow for 5 pounds each.
A porter offered to help with the bike at Jo'burg as the lift was out of order....hmmm...,it was but there are others and walkways to the other floors.
went for a 4-5 mile run yesterday to the bike shop then built the bike. Was in bed by 2100 and woke at 0700 to look out the window for the sun position and sea state then back to bed for another 2 1/2 hours
breakfast was adequate for under 2 pounds.

going for a lap of the bike this afternoon and a lap of the run.

Swimming in a group tomorrow morning

the time is nearly here to leave England and venture back to the world of Trimania...gulp! Ironman South Africa ready or not here I come.

I have my worthy steed packaged with numerous other items to utilise the weight allowance of 23kg and my suitcase is filling nicely.

My new Helix wetsuit came today from my sponsor Blueseventy and very nice it is too. It fits where it touches. Really quick to get out of. Also got some great looking goggles with mirrored lenses. Cant wait to try them out. Will put a link to them when I get back.

I went for a massage tonight to iron out the lumps left over from last weeks Half marathon. Sore but worth every minute.... and penny! Thanks Hannah

In 2 days time i'll be somewhere over Africa heading to Port Elizabeth heading to the sun and warmth.

Hoping to get online and update while i'm there but otherwise you can hear from me when i get back. I'll be thinking about everyone watching with interest on www.ironmanlive.com and this will spur me on.

I could barely walk Monday and Tuesday but fortunately I had a massage booked for Tuesday night. Painful but bliss afterwards.

I went along to training with the BRAT club tonight whish is usually the efforts night. And it was.
I ran to the meeting place, about 2.5 miles away at a slow jog to warm my legs up and did some stretching before everyone arrived.
The session consisted of a jog to a lake in the University area then 30 min run involving two loops. One hilly loop at 10km pace with about 25metres ! of recovery then a shorter hilly loop at 5km pace.
I met Dale there so we completed the sets together.
My legs are now hurting again!! Needless to say it was a slow jog home.
Self massage it is then.

The racing started today with the Fleet Half Marathon!

Hi all

this is my first attempt at the blog

I went to the Fleet half marathon today and scored a pb!! not bad for a 40 year old. I just keep getting faster with age.
I scared myself early on with a 5:25 for the 1st mile but knew it would get slower....and it did. I seemed to run around the 5:40 - 5:50 mark and finished in 1:15:41 taking a whole minute of my previous best. Well chuffed.
Let's hope it's a good sign of things to come in Ironman South Africa. 3 weeks today!
You can follow my race at ironmanlive.com on 5 April 09. I'll try to make it worth it watching.
